Contributions of Donald J. Lipscomb to early forestry GIS and low cost applications to address issues of southern forestry

Abstract

This paper is a tribute to Donald J. Lipscomb who spent a career dedicated to illustrating how one might use GIS technology to improve forestry practice in the Southeastern United States, primarily through innovations using low cost technology that would be available to smaller forest landowners. His work included GIS applications to stand mapping and forest inventory, mapping red-cockaded woodpecker habitat, mapping and evaluation of streamside management zones, and evaluation of land use in and adjacent to protected lands across North America.
